November 2019

From the Desk of the Principal
Parent-Teacher Conferences are upon us.  I'm excited for the two days of awesomeness.  Our students always impress me with their ability to articulate their progress as a learner and citizen.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I'd like to share that I'm thankful for having the opportunity to serve as the principal of Kaneland Harter Middle School.  I'm thankful that our dedicated staff goes above and beyond to ensure all of our students receive an education that is second to none.  I'm thankful that our parents send us amazing students to work with each day.  I'm thankful that our learning community puts education at the top of the priority list.  I can't say thank you enough!

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.  If I can ever be of assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Self-Awareness Week
Harter Middle School recently held our first ever Self-Awareness Week where students and staff participated in a variety of activities to help us all become more self-aware.  The week-long activities challenged us to:
  • give back to yourself
  • accept challenges
  • learn new and interesting facts about being healthy
  • understand what works for you
  • find resources that support a healthy lifestyle
A huge thank you goes out to the staff and students for making this a successful week.

Our Security Task Force created a video regarding the ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) method.  Click here to access the video.

Parent/Teacher Conferences - Student-Led Conferences
If you haven't signed up for a conference, please do so soon.  Our slots are almost full for both days (November 6th & 7th).  You child's team has sent a Sign-Up Genius link which will help you schedule a conference.

Our staff and students begin working on student-led conferences months in advance.  Our teachers coach our students and prepare them to share detailed and specific information at the conference.  You may not see all of your child's teachers on this night, but please know that each teacher has worked with your child to help them share information the teacher would normally share in a traditional conference.  These reflection and advocacy skills are important in helping students become lifelong learners and if we truly want our students to drive their own education, student-led conferences is a great avenue in helping our students develop and strengthen the needed skills.

Outdoor Classroom
The students and staff have been working on the outdoor classroom for a couple of years.  Students have built picnic tables, standing tables, and other seating options.  With the help of Suzanne Satterfield, Mike Livorsi, and the generous donations from community groups, our outdoor classroom is complete.  We'd like to thank Railside Charities and our own KHMS PTO for their donations in making our outdoor classroom a reality.

5Essentials Survey
As we've done in previous years, students (grades 4-12) and parents will have the opportunity to take the Illinois 5Essentials Survey.  You can find more information regarding the survey by clicking here.

The 5Essentials Survey provides school districts with detailed data on school culture and climate by inquiring into five leading areas for school improvement.

Parents can access the 5Essentials Survey by clicking here.  Students will take the 5Essentials Survey during the school day.
