April 2019

From the Desk of the Principal
I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable spring break.  As I told the staff today, it's good to get the family back together.  We are looking forward to welcoming your child back!

I decided to forgo writing about personalized learning this month.  With the passing of Ms. Hamblen, Harter Middle School wanted to thank the parents and students for the well wishes and positive messages sent our way.  This was a shock to all of us and losing someone this special is not easy.  During the week of her passing, we had days of grieving, days of questions, and a day of celebration.  Our students handled their emotions in positive ways and our staff was here to support them.  The support we received from the elementary buildings and Kaneland High School was exemplary.  We can't thank them enough for spending their time at Harter working with students and staff during the grieving process.  In the end, we came together as a family and dealt with a difficult situation the best we could.  I'm sure as a parent you hugged your child a little harder that week.  I definitely did.  Life is precious!

Below are pictures that I felt represent our learning community and make me proud to be a Knight.

Our students asked if they could paint on our windows to honor Ms. Hamblen.

On top of the art work on our windows, students built a bench on their own and have dedicated it to Ms. Hamblen.  This bench will be placed in our outdoor classroom area for all to use.

We also had posters on the wall in the hallway leading to the gym where students could sign their name or write a message regarding Ms. Hamblen.  We also had students write letters to Ms. Hamblen's family and they were delivered by our staff.  The outpouring of love was evident in numerous ways and our learning community was and is impressive.

As we transition back from spring break, I'd like to express that we are all here for each other and we are all in this together.  If you child needs anything, please reach out to us.  Our support system here at Harter is second to none and we are happy to help.

If I can ever be of assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Proud to be a Knight!

Harter Working With our Communities and Beyond

  • Congratulations to our 6 White Team for being named the Pop Tabs Competition winner.  Truly a great cause.

  • Congratulations to our Peer Buddy Group that fed 66 kids through Feed Our Starving Children.  We have awesome students!

  • Congratulations to our Spanish Department and the success they had with the Pulsera Project.  Our students rally together to help others and it shows.

  • Congratulations Suzanne Farr and our art students for being a part of the 2nd Annual Gallery 125 that was held at the Sugar Grove Library.  Our students' art work was on display all month.

1:1 Chromebook Implementation for 2019-2020
We are hosting a parent informational meeting regarding the recent approval of each student receiving their own chromebook beginning next school year.  The meeting will be held on April 22nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Harter cafeteria.  We hope you are able to join us.

PTO News
The KHMS PTO is currently looking for Board Members beginning the 2019-2020 school year.  If you are interested in serving the PTO through a Board position, please contact the PTO at KHMSPTO@gmail.com.  We promise this isn't a lot of work.

Sub Nurses Needed
Kaneland school district is looking to add nurses to our sub pool.  If you would be interested in serving as a substitute nurse in one of our schools, please click this link to fill out the online application for substitute nurse.  Thank you for your consideration!

IAR Testing
All students will take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) assessments the week of April 8-12.  The schedule is below.

8th Grade = April 8, 9, and 10
7th Grade = April 8, 9, and 10
6th Grade = April 10, 11, and 12

The following are key points regarding testing:
  • We will have special schedules on the above testing dates.  Please try to avoid taking your child out of school on these days.  If a student misses school, make-up sessions will be scheduled.
  • All students need earbuds/headphones for the tests.  The headphones need to be wired since our chromebooks do not support bluetooth headphones.
  • Students will need a book to read after they complete each test.
  • Please ensure your child gets a good night sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast on these days.  Research shows that these are two important factors that assist students in doing their best.
