December 2018

From the Desk of the Principal
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I certainly enjoyed the time with my family and the opportunity to relax.  It's still hard to believe we just wrapped up Thanksgiving and are now in full swing with the holiday season.

Progress reports were emailed on Friday, which means we are already halfway through the 2nd Term.  This is always a heavy reflection period for me as we stare down the 2nd half of the school year.  One recent reflection came after a gathering I had with some childhood friends of mine.  I often talk about the family feel Kaneland provides and how lucky I am to serve as the principal of Kaneland Harter. When I spoke to my friends about how amazing Harter is because of who we are as a learning community (dedication to students, personalized learning, social and emotional learning, physical well-being, supportive parents, awesome students, a wide variety of extra-curricular offerings), my friends jokingly asked if they could send their children to Kaneland.  I'm proud of our efforts of working together to ensure our students receive a top-notch education.  Sure, we're not perfect, but the successes we continue to achieve and the growth that is taking place should not go unnoticed.  Thank you for partnering with us and embracing our journey of college, career, and community readiness.

Have a wonderful holiday season.

If I can ever be of assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.

5Essentials Survey
Our students will be completing the 5Essentials soon.  We would also like our parents to take the survey.  You can access the survey by clicking here.

The 5Essentials Survey provides school districts with detailed data on school culture and climate by inquiring into five leading areas for school development.  More information can be found here.

i-Ready Testing
All students will take the second diagnostic assessment in i-Ready for both reading and math during the week of December 3rd.  i-Ready, along with other data, helps us strengthen our efforts in meeting the needs of all students, which includes scheduling appropriate courses/classes.

Please help us by reminding your child to bring their headphones for testing.

Career & Technical Education Expo - 8th Grade
On Wednesday, December 19th, the high school Career and Technical Education Department will be at Harter to share their course offerings with the 8th grade class.  Staff and students will present information on the following areas: Family & Consumer Science, Culinary Arts, Digital Graphics, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Engineering, Construction, Computer Science, Agricultural Science & Business, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Entrepreneurship (VEI), Accounting, and Business and Finance.  Research shows there will be 4 million jobs that will go unfilled in the next four years.  Please look for a follow-up email, which will give you the opportunity to discuss the day with your child and share feedback and ask additional questions.

Family Knight Out
When you eat at one of the restaurants that sponsors our Family Knight Out initiative, a portion of the proceeds is donated to our PTO.  Our PTO is an amazing organization that supports our students in numerous ways.
