November 2018

From the Desk of the Principal
I couldn't be prouder of our students and staff.  When looking at this month's newsletter, I am amazed with how well-rounded our students are and how supportive our staff is in helping our students reach their goals.  I recently presented at a Board of Education meeting and I talked about how Kaneland has a family feel.  This family feel is due to the efforts of everyone in our learning community.  Students, staff, parents, and community members all play a significant role in educating our students and without this collective effort, Kaneland wouldn't have that family feel.  Thank you for everything you do to make Kaneland and Harter a special place to learn, work, live, and grow.

If I can ever be of assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.

School Fundraiser
All fundraiser food and candle items will be delivered to HMS on Wednesday, November 7th.  Items can be picked up after school until 7:00 p.m. that evening.  This includes any online or face-to-face sales that occurred.  It is imperative that all products are picked up on Wednesday as we have limited freezer space.  If you are unable to pick up your child's items, please arrange for a friend or neighbor to pick it up for you.  We had over $40,000 in sales, so the amount of product that will be here is quite large (4-6 skids).  Orders need to be picked up on Wednesday, November 7th.  We appreciate your efforts to assist us in the matter and we are sure that your friends, family, and neighbors that supported our sale appreciate your efforts as well.

All prizes earned through Great American will also be delivered that day in the students' boxes.  Additional prizes that we are offering here at school (limo lunch and the Main Event trip) will be scheduled after students have the opportunity to deliver their items.  Tentatively, we will be looking at the limo lunch to Portillo's sometime at the end of November and the Main Event trip in December.  Letters, emails, and permission slips will go home approximately 10 days before each event.  We look forward to giving our students some terrific experiences in celebration of their AWESOME sales!

HMS Book Fair
Before or after your child's student-led conference, make sure to stop by our library and check out our Book Fair.  The Book Fair will be open from October 31st through November 8th.  All proceeds from the Book Fair will directly benefit the library.

Parent/Teacher Conferences - Student-Led Conferences
If you haven't signed up for a conference, please do so soon.  Our slots are almost full for both days (November 7 & 8th).  You child's team has sent a Sign-Up Genius link which will help you schedule a conference.

Our staff and students begin working on student-led conferences months in advance.  Our teachers coach our students and prepare them to share detailed and specific information at the conference.  You may not see all of your child's teachers on this night, but please know that each teacher has worked with your child to help them share information the teacher would normally share in a traditional conference.  These reflection and advocacy skills are important in helping students become lifelong learners and if we truly want our students to drive their own education, student-led conferences is a great avenue in helping our students develop and strengthen the needed skills.

Board of Education Art Purchase Awards
The Board of Education and Dr. Leden recently honored McKenna L and Delilah G for their outstanding artwork.  Both students were recognized at a recent Board of Education meeting and Dr. Leden informed them that their artwork will be on display at our district office.  Congratulations to McKenna and Delilah!

5Essentials Survey
Before Winter Break, students (grades 4-12) and parents will have the opportunity to take the Illinois 5Essentials Survey.  You can find more information regarding the survey by clicking here.

The 5Essentials Survey provides school districts with detailed data on school culture and climate by inquiring into five leading areas for school improvement.

Parents can access the 5Essentials Survey by clicking here.  Students will take the 5Essentials Survey during the school day.

PTO Family Knight Out
From November 1st through November 12th, Chilis will be hosting our Family Knight Out.  Three different Chilis will be hosting our Family Knight Out; Batavia, DeKalb, and West Aurora.  Click here to access the flyer.

When you dine at one of these three Chilis restaurants, a potion of the proceeds will be donated to the KHMS PTO.  Our PTO is a fabulous organization that gives back to our students and staff.

Harter Gives Back
Our 6 White Team donated 97 canned fruit items to a local food pantry.  Their goal was to donate 60 cans and as you can see, they far exceeded their goal.  Congratulations to our 6 White Team.

Our 6 Red Team held a donation drive to help support hurricane victims.  The donations were collected during their lunch time and they were able to raise $107.40.  Congratulations to our 6 Red Team.
