February 2017

From the desk of the principal...
As I always say, it is a privilege and honor to call myself the principal of Harter Middle School.  The Rosedale Reading Project is a prime example of why our learning community is so great and why I have an awesome job.  What started out as a school initiative has turned into a district initiative.  I read tweets everyday from other Kaneland schools and how they are supporting this great cause. Watching our students take on leadership roles and present to teachers, students, administrators, parents, and the Board of Education has been an absolute joy.  I am impressed with how we have come together to help others and our selflessness has been second to none.

As always, your feedback is important to us.  Please do not hesitate to provide us feedback that may assist us in continuing to move in the right direction.

Thank you for sending us your children everyday and thank you for making Kaneland great.

Proud to be a Knight!

Brian Faulkner, Principal

Rosedale Project
Our students and staff have embarked on an exciting journey of collaboration with a non-profit organization in the town of Rosedale, Mississippi.  The town is in dire need for books in their community.  This student-driven community service project has extended beyond the walls of Harter and into the entire Kaneland Learning Community.  With the help of our amazing learning community, we have collected over 1500 books and more books are coming in on a daily basis.  We are also working in small groups to build benches that can be utilized in an outdoor seating area and we can't wait to share pictures of the benches we make.

A great newspaper article regarding the project can be found by clicking here.

Online Security in Kaneland
The digital learning environment at Kaneland has been utilizing safety controls provided by Gaggle for several years.  Currently, Kaneland D302 uses Gaggle to filter inappropriate content in student email accounts.

Gaggle has extended the filtering capacity to the entire suite of Google Apps for Education.  To ensure our students continued safety in an online  environment, effective as of January 20th, 2017, we will make use of these expanded capabilities throughout the district.

8th Grade End-of-the-Year Activities
It's only February, but the end of the year will be here before you know it.  We would like for our 8th grade parents to have the following information regarding the promotion ceremony and the 8th Grade Dance.  More specific information will be shared with 8th grade students and parents in the coming months.

Promotion Ceremony
8th Grade Promotion is held the night before the last day of school.  As of right now, if there are no emergency days used due to inclement weather, the promotion ceremony will be held on June 1st.  If we do need to use emergency days, the date will change.  We will keep parents updated with any changes.

8th Grade Dance
The 8th Grade Dance is held after the promotion ceremony in our cafeteria.  We typically start the dance thirty minutes after the conclusion of the promotion ceremony.  The dance is for 8th grade students only.
