December 2017

From the desk of the principal...
December is here and it's a busy month for students and staff.  Although we are eagerly anticipating winter break, we are also eagerly anticipating a month where students will "show what they know."  Whether it is i-Ready testing, athletic tournaments/events, band/choir concerts, social/emotional learning lessons, or classroom work with our fabulous staff, our students will be able to demonstrate this month how awesome they are as a student, but even more so, as a well-rounded person.

If I don't see you at one of the many events this month, I wish you a relaxing winter break.

Happy holidays!

Progress Reports
2nd Term Progress Reports will be emailed home on Friday, December 1st.

i-Ready Testing
All students will take the second diagnostic assessment in i-Ready for both reading and math during the week of December 4th.  i-Ready, along with other data, helps us strengthen our efforts in meeting the needs of all students, which includes scheduling appropriate courses/classes.

Please help us by reminding your child to bring their headphones for testing.

Family Knight Out
When you eat at one of the restaurants that sponsors our Family Knight Out initiative, a portion of the proceeds is donated to our PTO.  Our PTO is an amazing organization that supports our students in numerous ways.

Board of Education Meetings to be Streamed Live
As part of our continued goal to increase community engagement, Kaneland Community Unit District #302 is pleased to announce that we will begin live online streaming of the open portion of all Board of Education meetings. The streaming for all executive sessions will be stopped and restarted when there is possible Board action following the executive session.  Otherwise, the streaming will stop just prior to the executive session. We believe that improving access to the decision-making process will foster a greater connection to our entire community.

A link to the live streaming will be available from on meeting dates. Video recordings will be available on the website within 24-48 hours of the meeting's conclusion.
The Board of Education typically meets on the second and last Mondays of the month. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. in Room 325 at Harter Middle School (1601 Esker Drive, Sugar Grove), unless otherwise noted on the website.

Please note that by law all Board of Education meetings are open to the public.  Oftentimes, we recognize students for their achievements.  If you are a parent or guardian who has requested by letter not to have your child’s name or image published, you may decline invitations to these recognitions.

November 2017

From the desk of the principal...
It's November, and as always, I see smiling faces as I walk through the halls.  I know I say this all the time, but it is an absolute privilege to serve as the principal of this fine building.  Our staff and students are second to none and it's an honor to work with the Harter Learning Community.

I'm excited to sit in on a few student-led conferences during Parent-Teacher Conferences.  I was able to help a handful of students this week as they practiced their presentations.  Our students always amaze me with how awesome they are.  There is nothing more rewarding than watching students take ownership in their learning and share their experiences with parents and staff.  There will be a brief survey tied to your child's conference to provide us feedback as we look to continuously improve.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday.  I hope you find time to relax with family and friends.

If I can ever be of assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.

HMS Marching Band Success

Congratulations to our Kaneland Harter Middle School Marching Band!!  The KHMS Marching Band participated in the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival Parade competition on Sunday, October 29th.  This year the band marched to the "Kaneland School Song" and "Uma Thurman." The band won "Best Drum Majors," "Best Color Guard," "Best Drumline" and placed 2nd overall in the Middle School Band class.  This is the first time the band has ever received caption awards for drum majors and percussion and 2nd place was a great accomplishment for the entire band!
